Backpacking in the Maldives

Is it really possible to backpack in the Maldives? The answer is yes, going there started out as a joke at first but then I realised that it's actually doable even with a small budget.

How to get there?

A few years ago low cost airlines such as Air Asia started flying to Malé from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore and if you're lucky you can find tickets for as low as 200$ return.

Where to go?

A few years ago the only way to visit Maldives was to stay at a private island with an expensive resort but today there are a lot of local islands which offers cheaper stays. Some of the most known local islands are Maafushi, Himmafushi and Thulusdhoo which is also famous for surfing.

How to get around?

If your planning to visit Maldives on a budget you can get around to a lot of the islands with local ferries, it takes a bit longer but they are very inexpensive. If yo have more money to spend you can go by speedboat, domestic flights or sea plane.

What about accommodation?

On the local islands there are a lot of places offering a room for around 40-60$ a night for two people including breakfast.

Best time to visit?

The best weather is between November and April, high season is December to March and if you try to avoid high season you can save a bit of money.
